Description:

  1. Habit and Habitat: Deciduous or evergreen tree, 5-15m tall. Terrestrial habitat.
  2. Distribution: Warm parts of eastern Australia, southern Africa, Hawaii, south – eastern USA and outside its native range in southern South America.
    Pecular characters: spectacular lavender blue blooms leads to its popularity. Is fast growing and leads resprouts easily if damaged.
  3. Morphology:
    Leaf: compound leaves (bi-pinnately compound), 18 inch long, with leaflets little more than 1cm (0.39in) long.
    Inflorescence: In clusters.
    Flower: Beautiful, lavender biue, tubular, 2.5cm long, terminal clusters with often the entire tree in flower, Appear in spring and early summer and last for upto two months.
    Fruit: Round, flat, reddish brown, woody capasule, 4-5cm in diameter containg numerous seeds.
    Fruiting season: late summer and early rainy seasons.
    Seeds: Woody seed pods that contain flat numerous small winged seeds.
  4. Propagation: formation of thicklets of seedlings beneath planted trees from which the species expand.
  5. Importance:
    Its main value is as an oranamental tree. It has also medical properties. Used to decorate Christmas tree and dried arrangements.
