Description
- Habit and Habitat: Scandent shrub, thorns spreading branches. Terrestrial habitat.
- Distribution: The tree is native to hillls and mountainsin China, India, Burma, Sri Lanka. Common on exposed and dry slopes and forest edges from 900-1500mts in India, Srilanka, Bangladesh.
- Morphology:
Leaf: round, 5 nerved from base, densely hairy beneath.
Inflorescence: Pedunculate cymes.
Flowers: in axillary and terminal panicles.
Androecium: long calyx with acute lobes.
Gynoecium: Petals absent, disc 5 lobed, styles 2.
Fruit: a globose drupe.
Seedss: Obovoid, turgid.
Flowering and Fruiting time: January to April. - Propagation: by seeds.
- Importance: Fruits edible, eaten by sambar. Spotted bear, elephants, feed on the plants.Wood preferred for fuel.Medicines used by Siddha System.The bark used to cure gastric problems.
